Stat Attack! Season in Numbers: 2009-10

Another week, another season relived through numbers! This time we go back to 2009/10, United looked to win an unprecedented 4th consecutive Premier League title! Alas, despite the high expectations, the season ended in disappointment. Chelsea beat United to the title by a solitary point!

29- Goals + Assists for Wazza!

Wayne enjoyed one of his most productive league campaigns for the club!  He managed to score 26 and create a further 3 goals in just 32 appearances!  Berbatov was far behind with 12 goals and 5 assists!

11- Yellow Cards won by Paul Scholes!

Scholesy was his usual self all season! Great passing, accurate balls, amazing goals and rash tackling. He was awarded a total of 11 yellow cards in his 29 league outings. Vidic also famous for his aggressive tackling, won 10 yellow cards.

71%- United’s win ratio in 2009/10

Manchester United’s win ratio at 71% was second to none in the league! To put it into perspective, the win ratio was just 46% in 2016-17- a clear indication of how well the team played back then.

3- League Cups won by United in the last 5 years

The 2009-10 season was not an amazing one in terms of trophies. Man United won just the League Cup all season. It was the 3rd League Cup triumph in the last 5 years! It was also the first time ever that United had successfully defended a domestic cup!

48- Appearances by Evra in 2009-10

Patrice Evra was Mr. Consistent for Man United in 2009-10. He made impressive 48 appearances and remained injury free all season. He missed games only due to fatigue. Wayne Rooney also enjoyed a positive campaign on the injury front, making a noteworthy 42 appearances.

8- Different player received 1 Red card

8 different players received a red card all season, and no player got more than 1 red card! United players also won 74 yellow cards all season, proving their expertise in the dark arts as well.

20- Times Michael Owen came on as a sub!

Owen started just 11 games but came off the bench a whooping 20 times! He was the original ‘super-sub’! On the other hand, Vidic and Evans were never substituted- always playing 90 minutes whenever given a chance.

109- Goals scored by United in all competitions!

As always under Sir Alex, United were a joy to watch! They scored 109 goals in all competitions. Rooney scored 34 goals (32% of all goals), while Giggs, Nani, and Scholes all scored an impressive 7 times.

9/10- Wayne Rooney’s rating for the 2009-10 season!

Thirty-four goals in all competitions says it all, but Rooney’s true worth to the team was exposed when he was injured against Bayern
Munich. Without him, United lost to Chelsea and, with a half-fit Rooney restored for the second-leg against Bayern, Ferguson’s team
fell short.
