Young and Fellaini shine and other United players rated from the 3-0 win over Basel

Here’s how Manchester United players fared in the 3-0 victory over FC Basel in the Champions League:

De Gea- 7

Distribution looked a bit shaky, but he just can’t stop making world-class saves. His spectacular save in the second half from Mohamed Elyounoussi’s shot was what thwarted Basel a comeback in this match.

Young- 7.5

Never looked like it was his first game in five months. His assist for Fellaini’s opener was sublime and his overall play was great as well. With Valencia out of form, Young could become a serious contender for the right-back if he keeps playing like he did tonight.

Smalling- 6.5

Solid performance, and his best moment came in the final minutes when his astonishing headed clearance thwarted a certain goal for the opposition.

Lindelof- 6

Looked short of confidence at times, but did well to keep a clean sheet. Could’ve undone his efforts when he looked to have slipped and tripped Bua in the box, but was lucky that the Basel player kept on playing. Can certainly improve on his positioning as well.

Blind- 7

Wasn’t tested too much in defence, but did provide a decent attacking outlet on the left side. Brilliant assist for Lukaku’s goal in the second half.

Matic- 7

Quietly effective. Indispensable player already for United. Can read the game very well and adjust his play accordingly.

Pogba- 6

Unlucky day for tonight’s man with the armband. Lasted for only 19 minutes before he was forced to come off with a hamstring problem.

Mata- 6.5

Worked really hard to try and open up spaces, and didn’t have a fixed position as he was all over the pitch. Did have a few unlucky moments, like his pinpoint pass for Mkhitaryan not leading to a goal.

Mkhitaryan- 6.5

Wasted two enormous opportunities in the first half but he was unlucky in the second one, to be fair. Was creative but always got marked by two or even three players whenever he tried to run away with the ball during a counter.

Martial- 6

A particular run in the first half lifted the mood around the stadium but his end result was far from decent.

Lukaku- 6.5

Another game, another goal for the Belgian. Also provided the perfect pass which Mkhitaryan failed to convert and only managed to hit the post with his effort.

SUBSTITUTES

Fellaini- 7.5

Perfect game for the midfielder. Has time and again proved his credentials but should get the respect from the fans that he deserves. Brilliant goal opened the dull game, while his passes and tackles were really important for his side going forward.

Lingard- 6

Replaced the ineffective Martial, but couldn’t bring anything special to the game. Did get some much-needed minutes though.

Rashford- 7

Scored a goal after replacing Mata. Has now scored on his Champions League, Europa League, Premier League and international Debut.

Subs Not Used- Romero, Darmian, Valencia, Carrick.
