Martial the hero and other United Players Rated from the 4-1 victory over Burton Albion

Here’s how the Manchester United players fared in the 4-1 victory over Burton Albion in the Third Round of the Carabao Cup.

Romero- 7

Made an excellent save at 2-0 which ended Burton’s chance of a comeback. Had a fairly quiet evening apart from that. Was subbed off for Joel Pereira for the final 15 minutes.

Darmian- 6.5

Played for the first time in his natural position, and was brilliant in defence. Could’ve complemented the attack more than he did though. Subbed off for Shaw at half time.

Lindelof- 6

This game against a lower league opponent was the best for him to gain confidence in the English game. But he looked clumsy and was unsteady at times and a poor pass in the second half gave Burton a decent chance which they failed to take advantage of.

Smalling- 6.5

Solid performance from the English international. His performances don’t suggest that he’s completely reliable but at least he’s much better than recent summer signing Victor Lindelof.

Blind- 6.5

Started at left back but shifted to centre-back in the second half to accommodate Shaw. Didn’t need to attack too much as Martial was ruining up the opposition on his own but he still managed to assist Rashford’s first goal.

Carrick- 7

You can well imagine the quality of the United squad if players like Carrick can’t find a place in the regular team. He was so good that it didn’t look like this was his first competitive game of the season. Made some aesthetic passes and long balls which were inch perfect. Needs to play more in Pogba’s absence.

Herrera- 6.5

Didn’t have his usual impact on the game, but he was still too good for the opposition. He left the defensive duties to Carrick and combined well with the attack. Even if he doesn’t do anything else, his mere energy is enough to win games against such opposition.

Mata- 7

Was excellent yet again and dominated the passing in the final third. Unluckily his superb effort hit the post in the first half. Subbed off after the break.

Lingard- 7.5

Clinched a goal and an assist after a sumptuous performance. Started on the right initially but his regular presence in the middle confused the Burton defence.

Martial- 8.5

Undoubtedly the man-of-the-match. Could only bag one goal but was unlucky to have missed chances to bag a couple more. Was easily the liveliest player on the pitch and he tormented opposition defenders as if he was playing FIFA. Should have some compassion for opponents, as they need to go home and face their families as well!

Rashford- 8

His brace means that he’s now scored braces in four different competitions for United already. An easy opponent meant that most things came off for him. Subbed off in the second half.

SUBSTITUTES
Shaw- 6

Replaced Darmian at the break. Was mostly found in the opposition’s half and thus was out of position twice which could’ve proved costly. However, the fact that this was his first game after months on the side-line can mask all of his little mistakes.

McTominay- 6

Replaced Mata after the break. Couldn’t do anything much as he didn’t see much of the ball as United shut down shop. Looks really confident and composed on the ball, though.

Pereira- 5

Replaced Romero in the 78th minute and received a great reception. However, he was culpable of conceding a late goal which meant that United conceded a home goal after 132 days.

Subs Not Used

Jones, Young, Fellaini, Lukaku.
