Here’s how Manchester United’s players fared in the 1-0 win over Southampton in the Premier League-
De Gea- 6.5
Was barely tested seriously but was, as usual, reliable against a dangerous Southampton side. Looked a bit reluctant to come off his line at times, though.
Valencia- 7
Didn’t get as many chances to go forward as he usually gets, particularly because of Southampton’s fight and attacking display. But didn’t let any opposition players get through the left wing as he was very solid.
Bailly- 8
Brilliant performance from the Ivorian, who helped his side clinch another clean sheet. Was a rock in defence and it was almost impossible for Southampton’s attackers to get past him.
Jones- 8
Commanded the back line and produced a man-of-the-match display. The opposition tried to expose him with aerial passes but he intercepted all very well and wasn’t flustered at all.
Young- 7.5
Has been in superb form since his return from injury. Assisted his side’s only goal of the day, and was reliable in defensive duties as well, even though he wasn’t quite tested in the first half.
Matic- 7
Was brilliant in the first half and combined well with Fellaini in Pogba’s absence. Could’ve been better after the break as he was overrun by the opposition at times.
Fellaini- 6.5
Wasn’t too creative going forward but was solid and his positioning was excellent. Has enjoyed a renaissance under Mourinho and fans would be hoping that he stays in form for as long as possible.
Mata- 6.5
Not his best display as not much came off for him. Did create some chances but wasn’t clinical enough in both shooting as well as passing. Subbed off for Herrera at the hour mark.
Mkhitaryan- 7
As usual, he was United’s best bet during counter attacks as he helped in quick transition from defending to attacking. Some of his runs were menacing for the Southampton defence but his final touch was a bit heavy.
Rashford- 6
Looked really selfish at times, attempting dribbles and taking shots when his teammates were better placed. Was good in the first half an hour but was almost invisible after that.
Lukaku- 7
Scored his eighth goal in as many games for his new side. Looks devastating when quality players provide decent crosses for him.
SUBSTITUTES
Herrera- 6.5
Provided a great additional presence and energy in the middle of the park against a robust Southampton midfield, but was guilty of missing a great chance which could’ve put the game to rest.
Smalling- 6.5
Was solid as Mourinho parked the bus and played five in defence as Southampton looked dangerous. Made a couple of timely aerial clearances.
Blind- NA
Came on too late to make an impact.
Subs Not Used– Romero, Carrick, Lingard, Martial.
