UEFA Champions League Roundup: Barcelona rest Messi and qualify as Liverpool’s bad habits emerge once more

Manchester United slipped to a shock 1-0 defeat in Basel last night, as the penultimate round of matches in this season’s UEFA Champions League took place. Outside of the Man United roundup, what else happened in this matchday?

Yet more records have tumbled for Cristiano Ronaldo as Real Madrid thumped APOEL 6-0. Ronaldo’s second-half brace saw his tally for 2017 in the Champions League move to a record-breaking 18. Madrid are now through to the knockout stages.

However, the current holders of the trophy only go through as group runners-up as Tottenham finished top of Group H after coming from behind to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1. All that is left for Dortmund this season in Europe is compete with APOEL in the final matchday of the group to win a place in the Europa League.

Napoli have a chance of going through to the next stage, following a convincing 3-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk. All their goals came in the second half and leave the Serie A leaders three points behind the Ukrainians going into the final round of matches. Manchester City beat Feyenoord 1-0, thanks to a goal by Raheem Sterling.

Liverpool let a three-goal lead slip away to Sevilla, the match finishing in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Maribor’s injury-time equaliser curtailed Spartak Moscow’s hopes of moving joint top of the group.

AS Monaco were the darlings of Europe last season, their young side making it all the way to the semi-finals. This year is a different matter as they will finish bottom of their group, crushed 4-1 by RB Leipzig. Porto and Besiktas drew 1-1.

Barcelona took the bold step of “resting” Leo Messi for their match with Juventus, the 0-0 draw being enough for the La Liga leaders to move into the next round. Juventus should be joining them, only defeat to Olympiakos with Sporting beating Barca in the final matchday would prevent them.

Antoine Griezmann was the toast of the Atletico half of Madrid, a stunning overhead kick inspiring Diego Simeone’s side to a 2-0 win over Roma. Roma still lead Atleti by two points going into the final round of games. Chelsea are through, following a 4-0 win away to Qarabag.

Celtic made the mistake of taking the lead in Paris, as Paris Saint-Germain then went through the gears to beat them 7-1. They will finish top of their group, with Bayern Munich in second following their 2-1 win at Anderlecht.

CSKA Moscow finally kept a clean sheet in Europe, beating Benfica 2-0 as Manchester United fell 1-0 in Basel. A late winner for the Swiss side leaves United needing one point to finish top of the group.
