Player Ratings from Newcastle United 1-0 Manchester United

David De Gea (6)

Outstanding save from Shelvey early on but poor defending led to a barrage of chances and could do nothing about the goal.

Antonio Valencia (5)

Dealt with Kenedy well on the right flank but a quieter than usual game for a lively right back at worst.

Phil Jones (5)

Performed better than the horror show at Wembley. Both mentally and physically. Dives into last ditch tackles like some member of the secret service. Solid on the ball.

Chris Smalling (1)

This is a first. A one is a rarity but Smalling deserved it. Amateurish and pathetic performance. His dive led to the free-kick. His mistake led to the goal. Not a single successful tackle. Not United standard. Should be sold.

Ashley Young (5)

Coped well against the Geordie terriers but this time next year feel that Shaw will be taking up the left-back role more consistently.

Nemanja Matic (5)

A great pass set Martial free in the first half. Solid as usual but in a 4-2-3-1 formation the Serb stagnates in periods of the match.

Paul Pogba (4)

Didn’t look 100% in the warm up and it proved the case on the pitch. In the current formation he’s like a Ferrari in a car park. The 4-3-3 is the motorway.

Anthony Martial (6)

Denied by debutant Dubravka. A few bursts of acceleration dazzled but too inconsistent. Frustration of the earlier missed chance nagged in his head. Must learn from that fast.

Jesse Lingard (5)

Much quieter day. Number ten position doesn’t suit Lingard in comparison to somebody like Mata. Tried too hard at times to impress.

Alexis Sanchez (6)

United’s best player again. But missing what was an essentially an open net did the Chilean no favours, and will be the moment in which some fans will see where the match was lost.

Romelu Lukaku (5)

Lascelles performed outstandingly well to cope with the Belgian. A neat through ball set Sanchez away in the first half but otherwise an extremely disappointing day.

Substitutes:

Michael Carrick (6)

Offered composure but otherwise not effective.

Juan Mata (5)

Probed yet couldn’t find the killer pass.

Scott McTominay (5)

Offered an added aerial threat late on.
