Since the club’s formation in 1878, Manchester United have had players from all around the world.
This has ranged from Ireland to Angola.
However, until 1980, United never signed anyone from outside the British isles and thus their players would have almost always come from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
Outside of England, United have had 57 Scotsman play for the club, the most out of any foreign country.
This totalled 4887 appearances and 855 goals between them.
Here’s the top 10 Scottish players by appearances for the club.
10th – Willie Morgan
Morgan made 212 appearances for United in his seven years at the club.
He played predominantly as a right winger scoring 21 goals and assisting three.
Morgan made 22 appearances for the Scottish national side scoring once.
Morgan won the first and second United Player of the Year award in 1971/72, and 1972/73, which back then was called the Manchester United Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award.
9th – Scott McTominay
McTominay has made 228 senior appearances for the club since he made his official first team debut in May 2017.
Having progressed through the academy, McTominay has gone onto be a crucial figure in the last four years.

Recently, the Scotsman has widened his game and in doing so began scoring more goals for the club.
For the senior side, Mctominay has scored 25 goals and assisted six.
8th – Lou Macari
Macari made 228 appearances for United in his 11 years at the club.
Macari signed from Celtic in 1973 and left in 1984.
The Scotsman was signed as a striker, but later was moved into midfield by United manager Tommy Docherty.
Whilst at the club, Macari scored 42 goals.
He won the Manchester United Supporters’ Club Player of the Year award in 1974/75 and 1975/76.
Macari spent the last couple seasons on the bench after Ron Atkinson replaced Docherty as manager in 1982.
7th – David Herd
Herd made 239 appearances in his seven years at the club.
The centre forward joined the club from Arsenal in 1961.
Herd made five appearances for the Scottish national team scoring three goals equating to an impressive 60% goal to game ratio.
In his 239 appearances, Herd scored an impressive 135 goals, with 24 of those coming in his best league season in 1965/66.
6th – Martin Buchan
Buchan made 264 appearances for United as a central defender scoring three times.
Buchan, born in Aberdeen, joined United in February 1972, before staying in Manchester for 11 years.
His exit came in 1983 to Oldham Athletic where he subsequently retired two years later.
Buchan made 42 league appearances in his second year at the club but didn’t make 40+ appearances in the league again until the 1979/80 season seven years later.
5th – Darren Fletcher
Fletcher made 342 appearances for the red devils in his fifteen years at the club.
The central midfielder had a likeable personality and was always dedicated to Sir Alex Ferguson’s instructions.
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said: “Darren Fletcher was Sir Alex Ferguson’s pet.
“He was around the house for Sunday lunch. I never saw it, but that’s the rumours. Fletch never got a bollocking ever.”
Fletcher scored 24 goals and assisted 30 for United.
The Scotsman had a successful career winning the Premier League five times, the Champions League once, the FA Cup once and the League Cup three times.
4th – Denis Law
Arguably the best player on this list, Law made 363 appearances for the club.
Law is seen as royalty at United, ‘the king of the Stretford End’.
Law was one third of the iconic and unbreakable legacy of the ‘holy trinity,’ which included the late Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best.
Law scored 210 goals in 363 United appearances.
He was part of the ‘Busby Babes’ United team which made history in 1968 by winning the European Cup, cementing the red devils as the first English team to win this competition.
His legacy will forever live on.
3rd – Pat Crerand
Crerand made 367 appearances for the club.
He signed for United in February 1962, departing for Wits University in 1971.
Crerand made 16 appearances for the Scottish national side.
Crerand scored 10 goals and assisted three for United.
He signed for £56,000 and was a significant figure in the recovery after the Munich Air disaster and into the more successful years of the latter sixties.
2nd – Arthur Albiston
Albiston made 384 appearances for United.
Albiston originated in the United academy, before progressing and remaining at the club for 14 years.
Albiston left in 1988 to West Brom.
He made 14 appearances for the Scottish national team.
Albiston scored six goals for United.
He played largely as a left back, but made a few appearances at right back, and one at centre half and right midfield.
1st – Brian McClair
McClair made a staggering 442 appearances for the club.
He joined United in 1987, when after 10 years he left the club to join Motherwell FC.
McClair largely played as a centre forward scoring 115 goals and assisting 42 for the club.
He won the Sir Matt Busby player of the year award twice, in 1987/88 and 1991/92.
McClair made 35 appearances for Scotland scoring two goals.
McClair won the Premier League four times, the FA Cup twice and the League Cup once.
