Without a doubt, one of the best things about going to a football match is the atmosphere and a big part of what makes this is the fans who are instrumental in coming up with original and occasionally hilarious songs and chants.
Manchester United is a club over the last couple of decades that has become the subject of many, courtesy of its fans who have found interesting angles to exploit.
A club that is steeped in so much history and with numerous talented players and characters that have turned out, there is a lot of inspiration that fans have taken advantage of over the decades. Usually starting in the Stretford End (the kop), these then quickly find their way around the stadium.
Of course, there are a few that have stood the test of time, mostly about the club itself, though for those of you who are unaware of new ones, keep reading!
Glory, Glory Man United
Glory, glory, Man United,
Glory, glory, Man United,
Glory, glory, Man United,
And the reds go marching on, on, on…
Undoubtedly the most iconic Manchester United song, this is the main part and you can pretty much guarantee that you’ll hear it at every one of the club’s games you go to.
Take Me Home, United Road
Take me home, United Road,
To the place, I belong;
To Old Trafford, to see United;
Take me home, United Road.
Another classic one about the club, based on John Denver’s classic ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’, this is a particular crowd-pleaser among fans and is often heard multiple times during a match.
The above coverage is of Sir Alex Ferguson’s last ever game in charge at Old Trafford, with the club fittingly having already been crowned champions. You probably don’t even need to be a fan to feel the atmosphere and the highly-charged emotion in this video.
United Are The Team For Me
U-N-I-T-E-D
United are the team for me
With A knick knack paddy whack give a dog a bone
Why dont City f*ck off home
Any true United fan knows this – a recreation of children’s Marching Song by Mitch Miller, with much different lyrics, but the same melody the song pokes fun at fierce rivals Manchester City.
Iconic Songs About Players
There are, of course, numerous more songs about the club in general, though those are the main ones above. Below, you will find more about legends of the club over the decades.
That Boy Ronaldo
He plays on the left,
He plays on the right.
That Boy Ronaldo,
Makes England look sh*te!
No explanation needed really – lyrics to what is a commonly-used melody in football and many chants have used it. But, here’s a reminder anyway!
Eric Cantona
Who’s that friend we have in Jesus,
He’s our saviour from afar,
Who’s that friend we have in Jesus,
And his name is Cantona,
Oooh ahhh Cantona,
Oooh ahhh Cantona,
Oooh ahhh, oooh ahhh, oooh ahhh Cantona,
Oooh ahhh Cantona
Perhaps one of the most famous songs of any football player – this has been going for at least 30 years and is sung even today.
George Best
Going on up to the spirit in the sky,
It’s where I’m gonna go when I die,
When I die and they lay me to rest,
I’m gonna go on the p*ss with Georgie Best
Lyrics put to the famous ‘Spirit in the Sky’ song by US singer/songrwiter, Norman Greenbaum, this is about arguably one of the best players (George Best) to ever pull on the United jersey and a fittingly beautiful tribute.
