Manchester United are the biggest club in the world. Fans of other clubs hate it when we say that, but only because it’s true. You may hear arguments against the claim, but my any credible measurable statistic it is undeniable.

The one that I think proves it most strongly, is the sheer number of official Manchester United Supporter’s Clubs there are around the world. Most people would agree that a football club is nothing without its fans. You could even argue that the fans are the club. So a club with 350+ official supporter’s clubs across 93 different countries can certainly make a solid claim to be the biggest club in the world.

What Counts as an Official Supporter’s Club?

I’m not just talking about a few mates with a Facebook page who meet up in the same bar to watch the game each week. Official supporter’s clubs are properly organised and formally recognised by Man Utd itself.

Each club needs to meet certain requirements such as having a minimum number of members, a proper committee structure with members elected to various positions, it needs a constitution, and it goes through an annual renewal process with Man Utd.

Once formally recognised, the supporter’s clubs maintain an ongoing relationship with Old Trafford. They can even serve as a route to get tickets to matches, and have their say in the future of the club. However, they are also supposed to adhere to the Supporter’s Club Code of Conduct which Man Utd created.

Why Are These Clubs Important?

Being a casual fan is fine, but for people who want to show extra commitment, supporter’s clubs are the only real option.

They provide a structured way to get involved that is actually recognised by Manchester United, not to mention a ready made community of like minded fans. Being in a supporter’s club also comes with benefits such as events, days out, and access to opportunities that would be more difficult to find as a casual fan.

Members will meet regularly, obviously watch games together, and even arrange events like tours or even meet and greets with past players.

Going back to the claim that Manchester United are the biggest club in the world, this list pretty much proves the point.

It takes an additional level of commitment to set up or join an official Man United Supporter’s Club. There are usually membership fees, members are expected to be active and get involved – it’s not passive in the way buying a replica shirt is, or watching a match on TV with your dinner.

Not many football clubs have a global network of official supporter’s clubs around the globe, and the few that do don’t have as many as Manchester United.
