Bruno Fernandes: The Greatest Man Utd Player To Never Win The Premier League?

Bruno Fernandes is flirting with legendary status at Manchester United. For some he has already earned that title, for others he’s not quite there, but no one can deny that he is close.

In my opinion, if he had a Premier League title under his belt it would be signed and sealed and we would be naming a hospitality box after him or something.

Bruno has contributed so much to Manchester United, but he has done so at a time when the club was in chaos. This has undoubtedly held him back in terms of career achievements, but it has also partly hidden his impact at the club.

Think back to some of our darkest times. Now try to imagine how much worse it would have been without him. Fernandes won us games single handed on numerous occasions, literally dragging the team along with him.

He is probably our only truly elite level player right now, and he could conceivably leave the club without winning a Premier League medal. That leads me on to the question: is Bruno Fernandes the greatest Man Utd player to never win the Premier League?

How Good Is Bruno Fernandes?

For me, Bruno Fernandes is one of the few United players that would have made it into some of our very best teams over the years. The guy is unquestionably elite.

This isn’t just me fanboying over him either. The data backs it up.

When United beat Tottenham 2-0 at home on the 7th of February 2026, Bruno scored his 104th goal for the club. Added to his 96 registered assists, he hit 200 goal contributions. That is some milestone. Very few others have achieved it, and all those who have are considered club legends.

However, it’s not just the milestone itself, but the way Bruno did it. It took him just 314 appearances.

For context, it took Cristiano Ronaldo 339 appearances, it took David Beckham 393 appearances, and it took Ryan Giggs 424 appearances to do the same. Only one man managed it faster, and that was Wayne Rooney in 295 appearances. And these guys all played in Manchester United’s most successful era when the goals were flying in.

When your stats are in the same conversation with the likes of Ronaldo, Beckham, Giggs, and Rooney, you have a legitimate claim on club legend status.

And yet, Bruno’s trophy tally remains at two:

  • Carabao Cup – 2022/23
  • FA Cup – 2023/24

He has never won a Premier League title with Manchester United and, honestly, I doubt whether he ever will.

Why He Deserves a Premier League Medal

Premier League Medal

There are players that 95% of United fans won’t even remember who won more trophies at the club than Bruno Fernandes. It feels criminal that he hasn’t won a Premier League title with us considering his abilities, because it’s not him who has let us down, it is the other way around.

Bruno always shows up, always gives everything, and has always stuck by us, even when we finished 15th and the club were asking him to leave because they wanted the £100 million that Saudi were offering. Bruno said no. He was our Captain, and he was staying to help his club.

And look at him now. Top form under Michael Carrick, 4 wins on the bounce, and etching his name into United’s record books.

However, his contract is up in 2027. There is the possibility of a 1 year extension, however, Bruno is 32 this year, he will be 34 in 2028, and his legs will go eventually. Plus, these rumours about the club wanting to cash in on him while they still can persist. Even if he sees out his contract, will the club be ready to contend for the title before then?

It could be the case that Bruno Fernandes is one of our greatest ever players, just in the wrong era.

Is There a Better Manchester United Player Who Never Won A Title?

Fernandes Greatest Player

It’s hard to think of one really.

Bryan Robson would have been a strong contender but he was around just long enough to pick up two Premier Leagues. It was close, he was in his mid-thirties by then and not playing as many minutes as he used to. Mark Hughes is a similar story although he left younger.

Someone else from back in the day that people often forget is Paul McGrath. He is hugely underrated, partly because he was an 80s era player, and partly because he was a centre back. He left in 1989, before the Premier League began of course, but he played under Fergie and never got a First Division title despite being one of the best defenders of his time.

More modern contenders are harder to think of.

Pogba had huge potential but United never quite saw the best of it, and I’d take Bruno over Pogba any day. Angel Di Maria is another star name but he was never great for us. Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a contender in terms of ability and impact, but he was only at the club for one full season – yet still managed to bag an EFL Cup and a Europa League – so can hardly be classed as a great Manchester United player. Cavani is a similar situation, minus any trophies.

The only person I can think of is Juan Mata.

Mata was with us for 9 seasons and even crossed over with Bruno Fernandes. He was an important player during his time for sure, and an effective player, but he didn’t get the sort of numbers Bruno has, despite playing in basically the same position. Juan Mata was a great servant to the club and by all accounts a fantastic human being to have around the place, but so is Fernandes, who has almost double the goal contributions in 7 seasons.

It’s Bruno all day.

I just hope he can do a Robbo and bags a couple of Premier League’s before he leaves.
