There’s a feeling of inertia about Manchester United’s transfer window at the moment, isn’t there? We’ve made a couple of sensible additions, a few fringe players have been moved on or brought in, but there is still a section of the fanbase desperately waiting for a “marquee” signing. The big money star name that everyone can get excited about.
Personally, I couldn’t care less.
I don’t need United to win the transfer window, I need them to win games, starting with Hull in two weeks. To do that, they simply need to sign players who make the team better. It doesn’t matter what they cost, where they come from, or how famous they are. All that matters is that they work.
Signing of the season, Senne Lammens, taught us that much. Give me three or four signings like Lammens over a single Tchouaméni every day of the week.
That said, I think we still have work to do in the market. In terms of squad depth, Man United aren’t there yet, and with the new season getting very close now, the lack of movement in the transfer market is starting to make me a little bit nervous.
The Midfield is Still Light
I like both signings United have made so far: Andrey Santos is just 22, has Premier League experience and gives us energy, ball winning ability, and progressive passing, while Youri Tielemans brings bags of experience, creativity, and proven quality. Both players are good additions, but essentially, we have lost two midfielders (Casemiro and Ugarte) and gained two, so we are no better off in terms of depth.
And yet, we will be playing many more games this season, so we desperately need depth in the midfield.
It looks like Carrick wants to use Mount in a deeper role, but that’s untested and still doesn’t really bolster the ranks enough, even if it works out. Injuries, suspensions, and fixture congestion will all play their part to exhaust our midfield, and there is only so much our youth players like the Fletcher lads can be expected to handle.
We need someone else here.
Gaps to Fill Elsewhere
Midfield is still the priority, but left back is another position that needs support, as well as some help for Benjamin Sesko up front.
Lewis Hall looks to be off the cards now, and despite a great season last year, Luke Shaw’s injury record is a concern, and let’s face it, he’s 31 now. I’m not convinced Patrick Dorgu is a defensive minded left back, so I do think we need another player here with that mindset.

I had hoped we would bring Danny Welbeck home to serve as a back up striker, but he went to Chelsea – which I hate… just watch him score against us this season – and I do think we need someone there. We can put Cunha or Mbeumo in the striker role if we need to, but it’s not where either of them prefer to play.
Rashford’s future is another aspect to consider. If he stays, he will play. No way we pay him all that money to sit on the bench. In that scenario, and with Shea Lacey nipping at the heels of Amad and Mbeumo on the right wing, there is quite a lot of flexibility in attack, but we would still be lacking a second out and out striker.
What a Successful Window Looks Like To Me
The new season starts on the 22nd of August for United, but the transfer window doesn’t close until September the 1st. So we have time.
If United can add another midfielder who brings something else, maybe a destroyer type, a left back to compete with and eventually take over from Luke Shaw, and an older dependable striker who would be happy to play second fiddle to Sesko, I would call that a 10/10 window.
I don’t need a marquee signing. I don’t need record breaking transfer fees or wages. I don’t need it to be exciting. I just want the next Lammens. The right player for the right role who fits in at the club and makes Manchester United better.
It doesn’t have to cost the earth, but we do need numbers.
