Defensive strength has long been a foundation of success at Manchester United.
From centre backs who command the penalty area to full backs driving forward down the flanks, these are the defenders currently representing Manchester United.
Current Man Utd Defenders
Diogo Dalot (2)
Despite only being 26, Diogo Dalot is the second longest serving player at the club, having been signed by Jose Mourinho in June 2018 for £19 million. It took him a while to find his feet, even going out on loan to AC Milan in the 2020/21 season, but he returned to become a regular starter, and a very adaptable one at that, having been used on the right and the left as a full back and a wing back, and even as more of a midfielder in some instances.
He was named the Players’ Player of the Year for the 2023/24 season, emphasising the respect his teammates have for him, and was a key player in our EFL Cup and FA Cup victories under Erik ten Hag. Diogo has proven himself to be one of Manchester United’s most dependable and readily available players.
Noussair Mazraoui (3)
An unexpected signing from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2024, Noussair Mazraoui, made his debut on the opening match of the 2024/25 season, a 1-0 win against Fulham. He was an instant fixture in the team, making 57 appearances his first season and proving to be very versatile during an injury crisis too.
He has had a few injuries of his own to contend with during his United career so far, but is always a welcome site on the pitch and can be relied upon to always give 100%.
Matthijs De Ligt (4)
Arriving at the same time as Mazraoui, also from Bayern Munich, Matthijs De Ligt brought with him confidence and leadership qualities that belied his 25 years. He had already been the youngest ever captain at Ajax, the youngest player to appear in a major European Cup final (against Manchester United, ironically), and the youngest player to start for the national team since 1931.
He was a natural fit at United, making his debut against Fulham alongside Mazraoui, and stepping into the centre back role for the entire season.
Harry Maguire (5)
Harry Maguire was a high profile signing under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign, joining from Leicester City for a fee of £80 million – a world record for a defender. Within six months he was made team captain. Harry is a solid centre back who has come through adversity thanks to his elite mentality, setting an example of professionalism to everyone around him.
He may have relinquished the captaincy, but Maguire is still a leading voice in the dressing room, and as well as being reliable at the back he is a danger in the opposition box too. He’s well known for his ability to head home, and has scored important goals for the club, none more so than his winning header in stoppage time, which completed United’s 5-4 comeback over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final in 2025.
Lisandro Martinez (6)
Known as ‘The Butcher’, Lisandro Martinez is a fiercely competitive defender who never backs down to anyone. A World Cup winner with Argentina, Licha is a real fan favourite thanks to his never say die attitude, and his ability to start attacks from the back with passes that cut through the opposition.
He made is debut a week after joining the club in a 2-1 defeat to Brighton, in August 2022, and went on to win Player of the Month a few weeks later. Unfortunately, injuries have held him back in terms of appearances, but never in terms of performance. When fit, Martinez is a guaranteed starter.
Tyrell Malacia (12)
Tyrell Malacia was signed in 2022 from Feyenoord, where he had a been a key player. He made 39 appearances for Manchester United in his debut season, but was side lined for 18 months with a knee injury from July 2023. Upon his return a lot had changed at the club, and he struggled for minutes.
After a loan to PSV, Malacia was transfer listed ahead of the 2025/26 season but failed to sell, and has only made 9 first team appearances, mostly as substitutions, since returning from injury.
Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu (13)
A signing under Ruben Amorim, Patrick Dorgu played his first game as a Red on the 7th of February 2025, in a 2-1 FA Cup win against Leicester City. He immediately stood out as a very physical, hard working player, so physical in fact, that he was sent of on his Premier League debut against Ipswich Town.
The young Denmark international has been used as a left back, a left wing back, and even on the left wing where he was putting in some extremely impressive performances and scoring important goals before he got injured, including one against Man City and one against Arsenal.
Leny Yoro (15)
One of world footballs most highly rated young defenders, it’s easy to forget that Leny York is so young. The Frenchman joined from Lille in July 2024, making his debut as a sub against Arsenal the following December. It would have been sooner had it not been for an injury suffered pre-season.
A very exciting centre back who has already shown flashes of brilliance, and his ability to remain calm under pressure has been noted by fans and commentators alike. Leny Yoro already has plenty of minutes under his belt and there will be plenty more to come.
Luke Shaw (23)
Luke Shaw is officially Manchester United’s longest serving player, having joined from Southampton in 2014. He was the most expensive teenager in world football at the time. Named Players’ Player of the Year on two occasions, Luke Shaw is the club’s go to option at left back, although injuries have limited his impact over the years.
Despite this, Shaw has made over 300 appearances for the Red Devils, across 12 seasons so far, and is contracted until 2027. He was particularly effective when paired on the left with Marcus Rashford in the early 2020s.
Ayden Heaven (26)
A young talent who came through the Arsenal academy, Ayden Heaven was coaxed over to United as the first signing under Ruben Amorim. He joined on February 1st 2025, and made his debut a month later on March 2nd, coming on as a sub in an FA Cup defeat against Fulham.
Heaven has made a good number of appearances for United since then, and has impressed with his composure on the ball and aerial challenges, even winning his first ever Player of the Match in a 1-0 win over Newcastle in December 2025. He is contracted until 2029 with a one year option to extend.
Tyler Fredricson (33)
A Manchester lad and a United academy product, Tyler Fredricson is a centre back who was named as a sub in September 2022, but an injury side lined him for many months afterwards. He didn’t return to action until April 2024, and finally got his senior debut aged 21, in April 2025.
Regularly seen on the bench, a loan move to Celtic to help him progress more quickly was agonisingly close, but an ill timed knee injury collapsed the deal. Tyler is still seen as a promising prospect at Man United.
Diego Leon (35)
On the 5th of July 2025, Man Utd confirmed the signing of left sided 18 year old defender, Diego Leon. Also comfortable playing at wing back, Leon came from Cerro Porteño, where he was already an established first team player, despite still being a teenager. He is the first Paraguayan to represent United at senior level, despite not having yet made his debut. Although he did get a run out in a couple of pre-season friendlies.
Diego has already earned his first cap for the Paraguay men’s team though, having been a regular in the U20’s squad, and is widely regarded to be one of the great promises of Paraguayan football. Manchester United fans will be hoping the same applies to him as a club player.
Harry Amass (41)
Currently on Loan at Norwich City
Harry Amass has been a Man Utd player since 2023, having come through the youth system at Watford. However, he only progressed to the first team in the 2024/25 season, making his debut on the 16th of March 2025 – which was also his 18th birthday – coming on as a sub. United won the game 3-0.
He showed promise in his first few senior appearances for the club, but was loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday for the 2025/26 season, in an effort to speed up his development with regular game time. He performed very well, and another loan followed, this time to Norwich City, but unfortunately, Harry picked up an injury after just one game for the Canaries.
