Sam Mather – Winger Man United

Born in Salford on the third of September 2004, Samuel Mather, better known as Sam, joined the Manchester United Academy when he was just six-years-old. A winger who is able to play on either side of the pitch, he is also sometimes used in an attacking midfield role and has a keen eye for goal.

This was demonstrated when he was part of the Under-18s team that made it to the FA Youth Cup final and he scored against both Scunthorpe United and Everton in the run there, with both goals coming at Old Trafford. That meant that the young United fan had fulfilled a dream of his.

As if that wasn’t enough, Mather also performed well for the Red Devils in the January of 2024 when he scored all four goals for the home side in their Premier League 2 match against Norwich City at the Theatre of Dreams when they won 4-2. He scored eight goals in ten games for Travis Binnion’s team, as well as enjoying a loan spell at Rochdale.

That allowed him to score his first senior goal against Oxford City. On the third of February 2025, he and fellow United Academy prospect Louis Jackson joined Tranmere Rovers on the Wirral for the remainder of the season.
