Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho may well be regretting his decision to hand Marouane Fellaini a bit part in the Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park.

For the former Toffees midfielders bit part turned into a major role when he came on and gave away a late penalty which cost the Red Devils dearly, giving the home side a draw and denying the visitors two vital points.

The 1-1 scoreline seemed unlikely as the game played out until Fellaini felled Idrissa Gueye in the penalty area leaving Leighton Baines to put the penalty kick away.

United looked to be coping with a surge of pressure from Ronald Koeman’s side in the latter stages of the second half as they tried to salvage something from the encounter.

Zlatan Ibrahimović had given the visitors the lead in the first half with a clever lob over and beyond the onrushing Maarten Stekelenburg.

But that was all to change and the result left the Old Trafford manager in an unhappy mood when he faced reporters following the draw.

Quizzed on giving away two points, the Portuguese coach pointed out that he felt pundits have double standards when criticising his team.

He said:

“When my team are playing pragmatic football and winning matches and winning titles, you say it is not right and nice. When my teams play very, very well, there is a huge change in relation. Now you say what matters, no matter, is to get result.”

Mourinho added that bringing on big Belgian Fellaini was aimed at coping with the Blues’ arial threat.

He added:

“Everton is not a passing team any more like they were in the past. Everton is a team that plays direct: goalkeeper direct, Ashley Williams direct, Ramiro Funes Mori direct. Everything direct.”

“When you have on the bench a player with two metres in height you play the player in front of the defensive line to help the team to win the match.”

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho may well be regretting his decision to hand Marouane Fellaini a bit part in the Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park.
