Similarly, in 2010, after three Premier League titles back to back to back and a Champions League trophy, protests re-emerged despite the success.<\/p>\n<p>In a Champions League tie against AC Milan, former red David Beckham left the field wearing the famous green and gold scarf which represents the original colours of Newton Heath, the name which United originated under.<\/p>\n<p>Fans at Old Trafford proudly wore and displayed their green and gold scarfs, with banners and \u2018GO Glazers OUT\u2019 leaflets around the ground.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This is a picture of old Trafford, Champions league 1\/4 final 2010. Its just a mife united fans have only been glazers out in the last 10 years . <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nuyAkyCe92\">pic.twitter.com\/nuyAkyCe92<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 DB (@Beeffy1999) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Beeffy1999\/status\/1686465562786836482?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 1, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, in 2021, when mass protests broke out about the Glazer families huge support in the European Super League idea, this would have come as no shock to the American owners.<\/p>\n<p>On the 24<sup>th<\/sup> April, thousands of fans protested outside Old Trafford against the possibility of the club joining the Super League.<\/p>\n<p>Then, on the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> May, ahead of a home game against huge rivals Liverpool, over 10,000 fans attended a protest, which saw around 100 people get onto the pitch and eventually get the game postponed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Man United fans protesting against the Glazers have broken into Old Trafford today \ud83d\ude2e <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BRQ9PmTodt\">pic.twitter.com\/BRQ9PmTodt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Football Transfer (@Footy_Transferr) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Footy_Transferr\/status\/1388867276821045249?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The sheer enormity and scale of these protests, for the first time, majorly unsettled the Glazer\u2019s, forcing them to introduce a fan advisory scheme for better communication between the fans and the board.<\/p>\n<p>Getting a game as big as Liverpool vs United called off, was a huge statement of intent from the United fans.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, hostility is still high, but protests have eased, although the desire to get the Glazers out still remains.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"We want Glazers out! | Anti Glazer chants at Old Trafford during a game\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Xx1lXabtzE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Therefore, when in November 2022, the Glazers announced their decision to put United up for sale, fans were joyous.<\/p>\n<p>However, just under 10 months on since this announcement, United haven\u2019t been sold and there\u2019s increased rumours of the possibility of the Glazers staying.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the Glazers will sell.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s why.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"financial-danger\">Financial danger<\/h2>\n<p>As the Glazer\u2019s purchase of the club was through a \u00a3550m leverage buyout, this debt was placed on the club rather than the Glazer family themselves.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, from 2006-2020, United have had to pay \u00a31.1 billion on financing costs. This includes \u00a3704m in interest payments from the buyout, \u00a3244m in debt repayments and \u00a3125m in dividends to shareholders.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MUFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MUFC<\/a> fans will be painfully aware that their club has paid huge sums for the privilege of having the Glazers as owners. Since the leveraged buy-out they have spent \u00a31.1 bln on financing: \u00a3704m interest, \u00a3244m debt repayments and \u00a3125m dividends. Averaged \u00a342m in last 5 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MmDqI9t2jW\">pic.twitter.com\/MmDqI9t2jW<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Swiss Ramble (@SwissRamble) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwissRamble\/status\/1389458738394943490?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 4, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u00a31.1 billion is an outrageous amount which has been lost due to these owners.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier League have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Daily\/Global\/2023\/06\/15\/premier-league-takeovers.aspx#:~:text=Premier%20League%20clubs%20have%20voted,of%20Manchester%20United%20in%202005.\">now agreed on restricting leveraged<\/a> buyouts to a 65% cap which prevents other owners doing what the Glazers have done to United.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, it\u2019s well established the Glazer\u2019s have leached a lot of money out of the club, but how have United been able to keep successfully running?<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"revenue\">Revenue and Commercialisation<\/h2>\n<p>Due to the size and global appeal of the club, particularly under Glazer ownership, United have used their strong branding to create huge revenue streams.<\/p>\n<p>Until the Covid 19 period, United\u2019s revenue had been consistently growing since 2015. When the Glazers first arrived, United\u2019s revenue was \u00a3173m, whereas by 2019 it had risen to \u00a3627m. Since then, after Covid, in 2022, it was back up to \u00a3583m and this was without Champions League football.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, from United\u2019s Q3 financial results, their revenue has grown by <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.manutd.com\/~\/media\/Files\/M\/Manutd-IR\/Governance%20Document\/mar-2023-mu-plc-interim-accts.pdf\">11.3%<\/a> from the three months ended March 2022. Crucially, commercial revenue increased by 5.8%, matchday revenue increased by 39.8%, but broadcasting revenue dropped by 1.6%. However, this is due to the lack of Champions League football. Then commercially, the rise was due to the acquisition of a new training kit sponsor in Tezos.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, despite United\u2019s revenue growth, since 2006, both Liverpool and Manchester City have experienced greater growth in this period. This is epitomised by the fact that both these clubs have overtaken United <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/566666\/premier-league-clubs-by-revenue\/\">as the top revenue<\/a> generating clubs in England.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It is certainly true that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MUFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MUFC<\/a> revenue has nearly tripled under the Glazers, rising by \u00a3336m from \u00a3173m to \u00a3509m, but it is worth noting that two clubs have outpaced them in this period, namely <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MCFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MCFC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/LFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#LFC<\/a>, who have grown by \u00a3417m and \u00a3370m respectively. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aShTCrGMHK\">pic.twitter.com\/aShTCrGMHK<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Swiss Ramble (@SwissRamble) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwissRamble\/status\/1389458757852278784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 4, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Crucially, commercial revenue specifically, is pivotal to the state of United\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n<p>In United\u2019s financial report from 2022, they said: <em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ir.manutd.com\/~\/media\/Files\/M\/Manutd-IR\/documents\/manu-20f-2022-09-24.pdf\">Such a reduction could<\/a> have a material adverse effect on our overall revenue and our ability to continue to compete with the top football clubs in England and Europe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 2022, it represented 44% of United\u2019s overall revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, for the Glazer\u2019s financial model at the club, it\u2019s essential that commercial revenues remain high.<\/p>\n<p>However, from 2016-2020, United\u2019s commercial revenue barely rose and in recent years has dropped, as the new sponsorship deal with Team Viewer was worth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/football\/story\/_\/id\/37615310\/man-united-lose-17m-year-teamviewer-shirt-sponsor-deal-sources\">\u00a317m a year<\/a> less than the previous deal with Chevrolet. Similarly, since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\/news\/11095\/12769103\/manchester-united-to-end-front-of-shirt-sponsorship-deal-with-teamviewer\">Team Viewer have backed<\/a> out of the agreement and thus United are looking again for a new shirt sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the increase this year, since Covid, United have failed to reach the commercial revenues they achieved under the deal with Chevrolet.<\/p>\n<p>This is a major problem for United.<\/p>\n<p>In their financial reports, the club have put this issue down to economic factors, United said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe underlying probability of being unable to renew or replace key contracts on similar or more favorable terms, or to partner with additional sponsors, has increased as the impact of COVID-19.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs a result, there may be a shift in focus for the majority of companies in the short- to medium-term, as these companies reduce perceived \u201cexcess\u201d spend on marketing in favor of protecting the operational and financial stability of the entity.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Whilst this is likely true, it doesn\u2019t paint the whole picture.<\/p>\n<p>A huge factor in less cooperation from sponsors was due to the protests. As United fans knew the way to \u2018hurt\u2019 the Glazers was through financial damage, they targeted sponsors by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\/news\/11667\/12297273\/manchester-united-fans-begin-boycott-of-club-sponsors-in-bid-to-put-pressure-on-glazers#:~:text=Argentina-,Manchester%20United%20fans%20begin%20boycott%20of%20club%20sponsors,to%20put%20pressure%20on%20Glazers&amp;text=A%20group%20of%20Manchester%20United,American%20owners%2C%20the%20Glazer%20family.\">\u2018boycotting\u2019<\/a> them and leaving bad reviews on their websites and social media\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, sponsors are bound to be put off from investing in the club at such a turbulent time, as fans could boycott your brand at any time and the inconsistent football means Champions League is never guaranteed, which is a further limitation.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, as a result, due to the lower sponsorship deals, this weakens United\u2019s revenues. With the Glazer\u2019s relying on United\u2019s strength commercially, this pushes them closer to financial danger and thus the need to leave.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fan-power\">Fan Power<\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned with the boycotting of sponsors, the fans are the most powerful entity to this football club.<\/p>\n<p>This is further illustrated in recent scenarios regarding Marko Arnautovic and Mason Greenwood.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, United tried to sign Arnautovic but were forced to back out after a wave of fan fury was unleashed at the club. This came due to the allegations around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tntsports.co.uk\/football\/transfers\/2022-2023\/manchester-united-pull-out-of-move-for-bologna-s-marko-arnautovic-after-fan-complaints-reports_sto9078675\/story.shtml\">Arnautovic using a potential racist slur. <\/a>He was cleared of discriminatory action, but as a club United has been built on principles and morals and fans felt the signing of the Austrian contradicted that.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, in the last month, United have backtracked on their initial desire to bring Greenwood back to the club due to huge backlash from fans. Richard Arnold had briefed people around the club of his upcoming return, but this news was leaked to the press and subsequently led to the protests which saw the decision changed.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, these cases as well as the protests in 2021, just illustrate the power the fans have to change decisions at the club.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, with the takeover process stalling, if the Glazer\u2019s were to officially announce their decision to stay at the club, it\u2019s likely that it wouldn\u2019t be long before huge scale protests begin again. Although they survived the ones in 2021, with the club in an even worse financial state than before, these could be bigger and even more damaging to the American owners.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, they may look to avoid such disruption as if they\u2019re forced to sell due to protests rather than in its current sale process, their seller power will significantly decrease and they may struggle to get as high a valuation as they initially desired.<\/p>\n<p>This has been exemplified just recently, when a report around the potential of the Glazer\u2019s staying due to their valuation having not been met, sparked a huge drop in share price. United <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\/news\/11661\/12955670\/the-glazers-manchester-united-share-price-on-track-for-worst-day-ever-after-20-per-cent-fall\">lost \u00a3600m<\/a> in value, in their biggest single day drop ever. The share price fell 18.22% in a day.<\/p>\n<p>This is a clear indication to the Glazer\u2019s of the financial consequence of not selling, which suggests there is no investor confidence in the club and the price of the club will only fall if they hold onto it.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, fan pressure can be a huge factor in forcing the Glazers to sell.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"last-straw\">The Last Straw<\/h2>\n<p>For many years, United\u2019s cash reserves were incredibly strong due to the huge commercialisation and revenues.<\/p>\n<p>However, in recent years, these have plummeted.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2019, they stood at \u00a3308m and went as low as \u00a324.3m in December 2022.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Manchester United\u2019s January options: Cody Gakpo under consideration. Recruitment staff not enamoured by low-cost forwards.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MUFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MUFC<\/a> have only spent once in last three winter windows [Bruno Fernandes 2020]. <\/p>\n<p>Cash reserves down to \u00a324.3m, from \u00a3308m in June 2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lauriewhitwell?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@lauriewhitwell<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Red Devils TV (@RedDevilsTVMU) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RedDevilsTVMU\/status\/1607290808062844928?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 26, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>They currently stand at <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.manutd.com\/~\/media\/Files\/M\/Manutd-IR\/Governance%20Document\/mar-2023-mu-plc-interim-accts.pdf\">just \u00a331.45m<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Such low cash reserves are not sustainable for a big club like United, who are looking to spend significantly in transfer windows without using owner financing.<\/p>\n<p>In United\u2019s financial results they said:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ir.manutd.com\/~\/media\/Files\/M\/Manutd-IR\/documents\/manu-20f-2022-09-24.pdf\">We face competition<\/a> from other football clubs in England and Europe. In the Premier League, investment from wealthy team owners has led to teams with deep financial backing that are able to acquire top players and coaching staff, which could result in improved performance from those teams in domestic and European competitions. As the Premier League continues to grow in popularity, the interest of wealthy potential owners may increase, leading to additional clubs substantially improving their financial position.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe increase in competition could result in our men\u2019s first team finishing lower in the Premier League than we have in the past and jeopardizing our qualification for or results in European competitions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is indirectly suggesting that without new ownership who can invest heavily in the squad, United could get left behind.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, in order for United to spend heavily in transfer windows with such low cash reserves and the Glazer\u2019s unwillingness to invest themselves, they\u2019ve had to use a credit system by taking out additional loans.<\/p>\n<p>This initially was used during Covid as a result of the low cash flows, but then was used to fund the panic signings of Casemiro and Antony after United\u2019s horrendous start to the season. Subsequently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/sport\/football\/transfer-news\/manchester-united-transfers-takeover-glazers-29615108\">\u00a3206.2m is owed to the Bank of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, United are expected to have paid this back by now using their increased revenue this year.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, the need to use loans to fund transfers just illustrates the dangerous financial position United are in.<\/p>\n<p>Transfer fees are only getting bigger and so with United\u2019s low cash reserves creating a heavier reliance on using loans, the likelihood of being left behind by bigger financial superpowers is becoming a genuine possible reality.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"debt\">Debt<\/h2>\n<p>With United\u2019s debt still at 650m dollars, this remains a huge looming issue at the club.<\/p>\n<p>Fans are getting only more infuriated by the ever-increasing debt and so if this continues it could spark yet another protest which leaves the Glazer family vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, this is further sparked by the payment of dividends each year.<\/p>\n<p>From 2020-2022, \u00a367.5m worth of dividends were paid. This comes at a time when the club consistently spoke about how the effects of Covid were damaging United\u2019s financial position, yet the Glazers were happy to take another chunk of money out of the club whilst in these \u2018difficult times.\u2019<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">If you think that the interest payments are bad, wait until you look at the dividends. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MUFC?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MUFC<\/a> \u00a3122m (around \u00a323m a year in 2020) is again by far the highest. However, with the financial state the club is now in, this is no longer possible. This leaves the Glazers wondering what the point in holding onto United is, as this situation will only get worse and their overall goal is now unachievable.<\/p>\n<p>The club\u2019s cash reserves have dried up, they have a huge consistent debt and an ever-increasing amount of angry fans.
