{"id":6715,"date":"2024-02-15T14:26:42","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.manunited.uk\/?p=6715"},"modified":"2024-02-15T14:27:14","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T14:27:14","slug":"why-michael-carrick-is-the-most-underrated-premier-league-player-of-all-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.manunited.uk\/2024\/02\/15\/why-michael-carrick-is-the-most-underrated-premier-league-player-of-all-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Michael Carrick is the most underrated Premier League player of all time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you ask most football fans who are the best Premier League midfielders of all time, you rightfully hear names like Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, Kevin de Bruyne, Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, when you ask people to argue why they choose these players, statistics or a heavy amount of nostalgic bias, is often used to justify their choice.<\/p>\n<p>Now there\u2019s nothing wrong with this, but lets delve a little deeper than that.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s discuss a player who\u2019s not flashy by no means, nor did he score many goals or assist many, nor did he look to claim plaudits, but a player who kept Manchester United ticking by and ensured the team remained clockwork.<\/p>\n<p>His name.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Carrick.<\/p>\n<p>Now you\u2019re probably thinking, do I think he\u2019s the best Premier League midfielder ever?<\/p>\n<p>No.<\/p>\n<p>Do I think he should be in the top 10.<\/p>\n<p>Also no.<\/p>\n<p>But do I think he\u2019s the most underrated Premier League player of all time.<\/p>\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"who\">Who was Michael Carrick<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5084\" src=\"https:\/\/www.manunited.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/michael-carrick.jpg\" alt=\"michael carrick\" width=\"612\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.manunited.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/michael-carrick.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.manunited.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/michael-carrick-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.manunited.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/michael-carrick-525x350.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 612px) 100vw, 612px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Carrick was an English midfielder who started his career in East London progressing through the West Ham United academy.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s one of the most decorated Premier League players ever now, but in 1999, the Englishman had his first taste of silverware and success winning the FA youth cup.<\/p>\n<p>To mature, Carrick was sent out to Swindon Town and Birmingham City on loan.<\/p>\n<p>His unique talent was quickly seen.<\/p>\n<p>John Francone, a former champion jockey, rang up West Ham manager at the time, Harry Redknapp, to sing Carrick\u2019s praises.<\/p>\n<p>Redknapp said: <em>\u201cI loaned him out to Swindon, and I remember getting a call one night from John Francome, the champion jockey who was a big Swindon fan, and he said, \u2018Harry, Michael Carrick is the best player I\u2019ve seen in years. \u201cThis Carrick you\u2019ve loaned out is the nearest thing I\u2019ve seen to Glenn Hoddle.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Carrick swiftly returned back to the irons, having spot the eye of Redknapp and was subsequently given his debut by him.<\/p>\n<p>Just a year later and the central midfielder had risen up the ranks to become a starter for the hammers.<\/p>\n<p>Carrick remained at West Ham for several years but after a relegation and subsequent play-off failure, Carrick was snapped up by huge London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.<\/p>\n<p>Two years passed, and with Carrick continuing to improve, Sir Alex Ferguson stepped in and stole the terrific midfielder away.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Michael Carrick \ud83d\udcf8 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rWBZ4j9Odq\">pic.twitter.com\/rWBZ4j9Odq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; centredevils. (@centredevils) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/centredevils\/status\/1755497276003221525?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>A deal rising up to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/sport1\/hi\/football\/teams\/m\/man_utd\/5222956.stm\">\u00a318.6m<\/a> was enough to secure his signature.<\/p>\n<p>12 years later and Carrick had won it all at United.<\/p>\n<p>Five Premier League\u2019s, a Champions League, one FA Cup, three League Cups, six Community Shields, one Club World Cup and a Europa League later and Carrick still hasnt earn the recognition he deserved.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"limit\">What limited Carrick\u2019s distinction<\/h2>\n<p>His major limitation wasn\u2019t in ability, but his subtle artistic approach to the game.<\/p>\n<p>Carrick sat in midfield and dictated the play like a quarter back.<\/p>\n<p>Playing in the \u2018six\u2019, the Englishman would shield the defence using his expert ability to read the game, anticipating and preventing opposition attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst in possession, Carrick was a magician on the ball, never misplacing a pass.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, with the complete indoctrination of Pep Guardiola\u2019s modern approach to football, through the use of a system which is completely reliant on keeping possession, passing based defensive midfielders like Rodri and Sergio Busquets are more regarded.<\/p>\n<p>However, Carrick came slightly too early.<\/p>\n<p>He was a prime example of the game moving away from the destroyer type defensive midfielders in Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira, to a more subtle but precise art of ball progression and ball retention.<\/p>\n<p>Busquets was a similar midfielder to Carrick, with an exceptional ability to keep the ball and a fantastic passing range. He rose to prominence in Spain playing for Guardiola\u2019s Barcelona in the late noughties, but this style of midfielder wasn\u2019t yet appreciated in England to the extent it is today.<\/p>\n<p>This only occurred after the arrival of Guardiola to Manchester City.<\/p>\n<p>If Carrick was playing in 2024, he\u2019d have been appreciated to a far greater extent.<\/p>\n<p>Like Busquets, Carrick had the complete passing package.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The range of passing Michael Carrick possessed was ridiculous <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/B14s0CZ8ee\">pic.twitter.com\/B14s0CZ8ee<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Former Footballers (@FinishedPlayers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FinishedPlayers\/status\/1689658612501630976?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Whilst football can be perceived to be a sport of the highest tactical demand, when it\u2019s stripped back to it\u2019s core, it\u2019s 11 men trying to score more goals than the other.<\/p>\n<p>A simple game.<\/p>\n<p>Carrick perfected this but had the ability to create nothing out of something with his outrageous vision and passing platter.<\/p>\n<p>Everything you\u2019re reading hear would suggest the Englishman should be held in the highest regard.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s where you\u2019re wrong.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"competition\">How competition killed him<\/h2>\n<p>Carrick rose to prominence in an extremely competitive era which saw the tail end of Paul Scholes\u2019 career, combined with the rise of both Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard.<\/p>\n<p>These English midfielders were known for their goal scoring and match winning contributions.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, for England, the Chelsea and Liverpool internationals dominated the headlines and were always at the top of the pecking order.<\/p>\n<p>This left Carrick, the less \u2018attractive\u2019 option, to loom in the background.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t score great goals, or assist many, so Carrick didn\u2019t pick up the spotlight nearly as much as his fellow English counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, unbeknownst to them, England were crying out for a player like Carrick.<\/p>\n<p>The national side tried to force in Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes all in one, but this just didn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<p>Balance was needed, and Carrick was that.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the overshadowing of him in the national team was definitely a huge factor in his lack of distinction in the game.<\/p>\n<p>This was exemplified when Carrick was picked for Fabio Capello\u2019s 2010 World Cup team but didn\u2019t feature once.<\/p>\n<p>Ex United and England teammate, Rio Ferdinand spoke about how underappreciated Carrick was.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe was undervalued 100%,<\/em><em> he should have had so many more caps, Ferdinand said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe would have added balance to the England midfield.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&quot;He should have had so many more caps!&quot; | Rio can&#039;t believe Carrick didn&#039;t play for England more\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JYQ2LCSR0tc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Carrick earnt just 34 England caps, which is still a huge honour but for a player of his ability, it should\u2019ve been more.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst Carrick\u2019s quality can be underappreciated, many legends and tacticians of the game saw his quality.<\/p>\n<p>Treble <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/hes-a-piano-16-of-the-best-quotes-on-michael-carrick#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20think%20Michael's%20the%20best,English%20player%20in%20the%20game.%E2%80%9D&amp;text=%E2%80%9CPlaying%20both%20with%20Michael%20and,a%20great%20player%20he%20is.\">winning manager Guardiola said<\/a>: <em>\u201cHe\u2019s one of the best holding midfielders I\u2019ve seen in my life, by far.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe\u2019s the level of Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets in Barcelona and Bayern Munich.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, from one legendary manager to another and former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, could also see the immense talent the Englishman had.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/hes-a-piano-16-of-the-best-quotes-on-michael-carrick#:~:text=%E2%80%9CI%20think%20Michael's%20the%20best,English%20player%20in%20the%20game.%E2%80%9D&amp;text=%E2%80%9CPlaying%20both%20with%20Michael%20and,a%20great%20player%20he%20is.\">Wenger said<\/a>: <em>\u201cCarrick is a quality passer and he could play for Barcelona; he would be perfectly suited to their game.
