Player Ratings from Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup

Manchester United

De Gea- Made some crucial saves, particularly the one from Cahill in the first half. Well beaten for Kante’s goal. 7/10

Valencia- Played as a right wing back for the very first time, but was largely invisible. Didn’t do much offensively but was defensively decent. 4.5/10

Jones- Dominant in the first half, but needs to work on his passing. Decent game. 5/10

Smalling- Solid defending, made a couple of important interceptions. Could’ve done better for Chelsea’s goal by trying to block the shot. 5/10

Rojo- Great defending apart from one or two nervous moments. Managed to win the battle against Diego Costa by keeping him quiet. Just like Smalling, he too was culpable for not trying to block Kante’s shot. 5.5/10

Darmian- An off day for the Italian full back in a new wing back role. Wayward passing, and no threat going forward. Played most of the second half in a central position. 4/10

Herrera- Started the match well, but made a stupid tackle and was sent off. His dismissal turned the match on its head. Couldn’t keep his head in a big match. 3/10

Pogba- Another poor outing for the Frenchman. Was overrun by Matic and Kante. Doesn’t look any close to being the world’s most expensive footballer. Another below par performance in a big game. 3.5/10

Mkhitaryan- Decent outing. Couldn’t pose much threat and was sacrificed for Fellaini after Herrera’s red card. 5/10

Young- Had a great game overall. Started in an advanced role, but was largely found successfully battling Moses in the right back position. Was one of the few positives on a dreadful day. 6/10

Rashford- Was undoubtedly United’s best player. Looked like the only player with a purpose. Showed immense agility and stamina and had a good outing in a lone striker position. Could’ve beaten Courtois though, after a brilliant run. 7/10

SUBSTITUTES

Fellaini (for Mkhitaryan)- Came on in the midfield when United were down to ten men, although he really should’ve been played up front to make use of his height and strength. Went up front late on but it was too late by then. 5/10

Lingard (for Young)- Introduced on the left side to provide the required urgency and threaten the Chelsea defence with his pace. Was unable to do much largely because of being subbed on very late. 5/10

Unused Subs- Romero, Blind, Carrick, Mata.
